New York, NY — June 22, 2025 — The latest exhibition from acclaimed artist Ira Oksman, “Inside Rooms, Outside Spaces,” opens to the public on June 22, 2025, at Galerie Shibumi. This debut solo exhibition presents a compelling exploration of the relationship between interior and exterior environments.
“Inside Rooms, Outside Spaces” delves into the tension between the pagan Slavic traditions and the emergence of early avant-garde art during the late stages of the Russian Empire. Oksman’s work invites viewers to reflect on these dualities, showcasing a series of acrylic paintings and other mediums that illustrate the interplay between personal, intimate spaces and the expansive, unpredictable world outside.
Highlights of the exhibition include works such as “Resting with Creature” and “Stupid Thoughts in the Kitchen,” both of which embody Oksman’s unique artistic vision. Central to the conversation within Oksman’s work is the character of the “Satan Mare,” a figure representing agency and the complexities of femininity against the backdrop of traditional narratives.
Ira Oksman (pron. “Éera”), born in 1985 in Moscow, is a multidisciplinary artist now based in Ridgewood, Queens. Her artistic journey is deeply influenced by her upbringing during perestroika, a period marked by significant cultural shifts. Oksman’s transition to the visual and performing arts reflects her multifaceted background and her ability to navigate through various professional landscapes.
Trained largely through self-exploration, Oksman has developed a distinctive style that bridges cultural narratives and experiences. Her works often engage with themes of autonomy and the examination of historical motifs, making her voice prominent in contemporary discussions around art and identity.
