Rafael Moreno Lozano opens his new solo exhibition, “Doble Exposición”, in Lima, on view from October 9 to October 30, 2026 at the Galería de Arte Renée Navarrete Risco, Jr. Contumazá 971, in the Historic Center of the Peruvian capital. Curated by Juan Peralta Berríos, the exhibition was inaugurated before an enthusiastic audience and admission is free.
As the title suggests, “Doble Exposición” is built on the idea of the double: two exposures, two traditions, two ways of seeing superimposed on the same surface. The exhibition takes as its point of departure the Peruvian indigenist movement and the broader history of Peruvian art, revisiting its icons and visual language through a decidedly contemporary lens.
The concept is articulated around two fundamental notions: fusion and transparency. In Moreno Lozano’s watercolors, faces, figures and symbols overlap and merge into one another, generating layered images in which multiple presences coexist. The viewer often discovers a second, or even a third, face emerging from within a single figure: a visual metaphor for cultural mestizaje and for the multiplicity of Peruvian identity.
The works on display, executed in watercolor, reveal an artist equally at ease with figuration and abstraction: a group of three women’s faces rendered in vibrant, abstract forms; the portrait of a woman crowned with an elaborate red and green headdress, from whose forehead a smaller golden face seems to emerge; a cubist-style figure in warm ochre and earth tones, with faces hidden within the body; two kneeling figures, one with ram horns and dark hair, the other accompanied by flowing light-blue elements, blending the human, the animal and the mythic; and a striking close-up of a man’s face in intense warm colors, with multiple eyes and distorted features, in a fully surrealist register. The result is a body of work that pays homage to the indigenist masters while openly embracing cubism, expressionism and surrealism: a “double exposure” of Peru’s past and its most experimental present.
Moreno Lozano is an active figure on the Lima art scene, not only as a painter but also as a curator and cultural promoter: he is currently coordinating and curating the third edition of “Del Cine al Lienzo” (“From Film to Canvas”), a collective exhibition opening on November 7, 2026 at the Centro Cultural Mansión Eiffel, in which more than thirty artists reinterpret classic and cult films, from The Wizard of Oz and Metropolis to Citizen Kane, The Seven Samurai, Dune and Pan’s Labyrinth.
The exhibition can be visited on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., until October 30, 2026, at the Galería de Arte Renée Navarrete Risco, Jr. Contumazá 971, Historic Center of Lima, with free admission. For anyone interested in the living evolution of Peruvian art, “Doble Exposición” offers a rare opportunity: to see the indigenist tradition not as a memory, but as a living, layered and translucent language, still capable of generating new images.
