The FIND 44 – International New Dance Festival is underway, transforming Cagliari and its hinterland into a widespread stage for art from September 19 to October 31 with the forty-fourth edition of the event organized by Maya Inc. and directed by Cristiana Camba. All the appointments, dedicated to a deep exploration of the relationship between body, movement, and public space, inaugurate an outstanding edition that boasts the EFFE Label recognition — the European quality seal for distinguished artistic events — unfolding around the theme “Thresholds: every body is a frontier; every dance, a passage.”
The festival opens Saturday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. on the terrace of the Bastione Saint Remy in Cagliari, with the international visions of Fabla Collective and Eyas Dance Project. Opening the evening is the performance “Do birds dream of flying?” by Fabla Collective, directed by and starring Inan Sven Du Swami and Mojca Špik. The piece investigates the deep tension between the human condition, bound to gravity, and the desire for suspension, translating the dream of flight into a reflection on the pursuit of lightness and the overcoming of material limits. Through an original and ingenious stage design — featuring an oscillating, rotating staircase created in collaboration with builder Anže Bizjak, set to music by Martin Vogrin and costumes by Iztok Hrga — the two performers open an aerial space to question how to balance the unstoppable human desire to explore the unknown with respect for natural and social ecosystems. The choreographic writing is built on a dynamic contrast between deliberate falls, vertical thrusts, and precarious balances, where the vocabulary of movement tests inertia and resistance in direct dialogue with the horizon line.
Next, space is given to the Spanish company Eyas Dance Project with “Oru & Kreia,” written and directed by Carlos González & Seth Buckley, featuring Paula Montoya Lozano & Paula Parra Martínez. Between science-fiction aesthetics and a palpable adherence to matter, “Oru & Kreya” translates the search for identity into a visceral and immersive experience. Two extraterrestrial presences cross the boundary of the real to embody themselves in terrestrial physicality, making the human form a virgin terrain of tactile experimentation. Skin, the resistance of air, the pull of gravity, and the warmth of contact become the coordinates of a sensory geography still to be mapped. Far from any didactic intent, the dramaturgy proceeds through pure visual and kinetic suggestions. In an uninterrupted flow of physical mutations — now fluid as water, now dense as flesh — the choreography oscillates constantly between the unease of the unknown and the grace of closeness, inviting the spectator to rediscover the wonder of their own body.
FIND 44 – International New Dance Festival is realized with the support of MIC, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia (Departments of Culture and Tourism), the Municipality of Cagliari, the Municipality of Quartu Sant’Elena, and the Fondazione di Sardegna.
