Alvin Ailey managed to cross every kind of boundary. The fact that a crater on Mercury bears his name says a great deal about the stature he attained, yet what is even more striking is the mark he left on the stage. Born into the harsh reality of the cotton fields of Texas, the dancer founded his company in 1958 — a feat both artistic and political. At a time when the African American community was bleeding under segregation, his choreographies became a space of dissent and racial pride.
Twenty-four years later, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Teatro Real in Madrid in October 2026 with a program that seeks to keep its founder’s legacy alive while continuing to renew it. Under the direction of Alicia Graf Mack, Revelations will once again take center stage — a cathartic and spiritual work about the wounds of the Black community — sharing the bill with more contemporary pieces such as Blink of an Eye by Medhi Walerski and Many Angels by Lar Lubovitch.
Founded in New York in 1958 at the height of the civil rights movement, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is today a cultural institution of global reach, designated in 2008 by the United States Congress as a “Cultural Ambassador to the World.” Its choreographic language — fusing modern dance, ballet, jazz, and African and Caribbean traditions — combines lyricism and athletic power in an expression without borders, though deeply rooted in the African American lived experience. The company will present two programs: the first dominated by emblematic choreographies of its founder; the second by works from recent leading voices — Medhi Walerski, Judith Jamison, Lar Lubovitch, Jamar Roberts — offering complementary perspectives on the body and transcendence.
