Murcia, May 25, 2025 – The Municipal Archaeological and Paleontological Museum of Rojales (Alicante) is hosting the exhibition “Masters of Painting” by Pedro Juan Rabal, which will run until the end of June. This exhibition features around twenty canvases specifically created by the Aguileño artist to honor the essential contributions of both male and female artists in the development of painting over the centuries.
The main hall of the museum is filled with reinterpretations of classical works by the great masters, transformed by Rabal’s unique style. Among these pieces are the “Mona Lisa with a Zipper,” an intriguing twist on Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic portrait, and Rabal’s homage to Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica of Ukraine.” Additionally, a bold rendition of Goya’s “The Executions of May 3rd” features the artist gazing directly at the viewer, as if questioning why he is compelled to depict so much suffering.
In a striking centerpiece, an oval-shaped Frida Kahlo presides over the exhibit, accompanied by four other influential female artists: Maruja Mallo, Tamara de Lempicka, Leonora Carrington, and Remedios Varo. This ensemble, referred to as a “poker of queens,” has been purposefully painted for the Rojales exhibition. It aims to elevate the visibility of female painters and challenge the traditional and unjust dominance of male artists in art history.
Rabal’s works draw inspiration from visits to some of the most renowned museums in the world, such as the Prado, Thyssen, Reina Sofía, and the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. He has also included more personal references, such as a portrayal of Kirk Douglas as the “madman with the red hair” and a surprising expressionist David Bowie. These additions reflect the influence of childhood memories spent watching movies in the summer nights at the Cine Capri in Águilas.
Recognized as one of today’s most prolific flamenco painters, Rabal continues to pay homage to Federico García Lorca, who not only composed works inspired by flamenco dancers and singers but also created a remarkable Book of Drawings. Rabal has incorporated elements of Lorca’s duende, a spirit of inspiration and creativity, into his own Mediterranean style.
This exhibition is a significant step in challenging the conventional narratives in art history. Through Rabal’s innovative reinterpretations and his celebration of female artists, “Masters of Painting” encourages viewers to appreciate a broader diversity of talent within the artistic community and recognizes the invaluable contributions of women in shaping the landscape of art.
