Sant Joan d’Alacant, Spain — An evocative new exhibition, Veredas del Cante, brings the unmistakable flamenco vision of painter Pedro Juan Rabal to the Municipal Library “Amelia Asensi Beviá” in Sant Joan d’Alacant. The show will be open to the public through March 27 and is organized by the Ayuntamiento and the Casa de Andalucía Rafael Alberti, with a mission to “unite territories through flamenco.”

Rabal’s work traces a vivid path through flamenco’s emotional landscape. The exhibition begins with Andalusia’s stalwarts—Juan Ramón Jiménez, Paco de Lucía, and La Niña de los Peines—and then travels northward through the Murcia region, guided by the artistry of Antonio Piñana, Antonio Ayala “el Rampa,” and Mercedes Luján. The journey culminates in the Alicante plain, arriving at Sant Joan d’Alacant and its surrounding sensibilities shaped by poets and painters alike, including Miguel Hernández.

Sant Joan d’Alacant stands as the host town, and the show features ties to its cultural fabric. Among the exhibited items is an homage to the era’s iconic figures, including Manolo Morán, the town’s notable resident and celebrated actor, who is represented in the exhibition in flamenco attire recalling the immortal balcony scene from Bienvenido Mister Marshall.

Veredas del Cante was inaugurated as part of the Sant Joan Casa de Andalucía Cultural Week. The event drew participation from the town’s mayor, Santiago Román, and the Councillor of Culture, David Aracil, along with many association members, including interim president Rosi Grao. A performance by young local artists opened the exhibition, underscoring the project’s community-first spirit.

Pedro Juan Rabal (born in Águilas, 1988) is widely regarded as one of the most prominent flamenco painters of our era. He has spent years exhibiting successfully across Murcia’s towns—Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca, Caravaca, Águilas, Archena, Torre Pacheco—while also presenting his work throughout the Valencian Community, Andalusia, Catalonia, and Madrid. He is a regular participant at renowned flamenco festivals, including the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas in La Unión and the Festival de Cante Flamenco de Lo Ferro.

Rabal’s thematic lines are dynamic, vibrant, and richly textured, reflecting a range of subjects tied to flamenco, regional traditions, cinema, and the women who broke the mold. His oeuvre also explores other motifs such as Holy Week and a series of grand paintings paying homage to painters both Spanish and universal—Goya, Dalí, Picasso, Velázquez, and Sorolla.

The exhibition promises an immersive experience that blends lore, landscape, and lyricism—an artistic journey that mirrors the flamenco path it celebrates. If you’re in the region through March, Veredas del Cante offers a compelling glimpse into how Pedro Juan Rabal interprets flamenco not only as a music genre but as a living, breathing visual tradition that travels across territories and generations.
