The exhibition Passaggi, featuring the works of renowned photographer Mario Giacomelli and illustrator Simone Massi, will be held at Zona Conce in Fabriano, Italy, from June 21 to October 19, 2025. Curated by Gianluigi Colin and Galliano Crinella, the exhibition celebrates the centenary of Mario Giacomelli’s birth, showcasing a juxtaposition of his iconic photography with the distinct animations and illustrations of Simone Massi.

The Passaggi exhibition serves as a unique intersection between two different art forms and eras, both rooted in the Marche region of Italy. This collaboration explores the connections between Giacomelli’s profound photographic narratives and Massi’s imaginative animated works. Attendees can expect an array of 35 images by Giacomelli alongside equally captivating illustrations by Massi, creating a layered narrative inspired by themes of existence, nature, and the human condition.

The exhibition’s curators explain the experience as drawing visitors into a metaphorical garden, much like the literary works of Jorge Luis Borges, where different paths intersect and create a rich tapestry of stories. This “garden” symbolizes the Marche landscape, filled with poppies, storms, and the essence of human life, showcasing the talent and deep emotional connection both artists share with their subjects.

Born in 1925 in Senigallia, Mario Giacomelli is internationally celebrated for his innovative photographic techniques. His work, characterized by strong contrasts and poetic representations of landscapes and human conditions, has earned him a prominent place in the art world. Giacomelli was inspired by key figures in photography and made significant contributions to visual storytelling, solidifying his legacy within major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Simone Massi, born in Pergola in 1970, has made a name for himself in the world of animation. Known for his unique scratch animation technique, Massi’s work melds profound themes with innovative storytelling. As a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the David di Donatello and several Nastri d’Argento, Massi’s artistic endeavors reflect his deep roots in the Marche region and its rich cultural heritage.

The Passaggi exhibition not only commemorates Mario Giacomelli’s artistic journey but also highlights the dialogue between two significant figures from the Marche region, each contributing uniquely to today’s art scene. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to explore these connections and reflect on the deeper meanings of existence expressed through both photography and animation.
