June 24, 2026 — Ten years after its debut, the iconic production of La Traviata conceived by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti and produced by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma is returning to the stage. Directed by Sofia Coppola in her operatic debut, Verdi’s masterpiece will be broadcast live in the heart of the city — Piazza di Spagna — on Tuesday, June 30, at 8:00 PM.
The initiative, made possible through the collaboration between the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and the Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti, stems from a shared desire to bring one of the most beloved works in the Italian operatic repertoire to the widest possible audience, celebrating the unique dialogue between opera, fashion, and cinema that defines this production. Valentino Garavani personally designed Violetta’s costumes, while Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli — then co-creative directors of Maison Valentino — created those for Flora and the chorus.
The project is part of the broader program of the Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti, whose mission centers on supporting and promoting the arts as instruments of cultural and social growth.
For one extraordinary evening, the Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) will transform into an open-air theater, offering citizens and visitors the chance to attend the screening free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis.
The event is organized in partnership with Roma Capitale, the Mayor’s Cabinet, the Assessorato alla Cultura, the Assessorato ai Grandi Eventi, Sport, Turismo e Moda, and Municipio I Roma Centro, with the shared goal of turning one of the capital’s most iconic landmarks into a meeting point and a celebration of public participation, reaffirming the value of shared cultural experiences.
On the occasion, Venus, the current exhibition at PM23, will remain open until midnight.
