Salerno, Italy – May 30, 2025 – The Salerno Medical School, a guardian of an ancient legacy and a cornerstone of European medical history, in collaboration with Studio Opera di Salerno, presents “Il Sesto Senso (The Sixth Sense),” an extraordinary exhibition honoring the remarkable legacy of the Mulieres Salernitanae. These visionary women, driven by audacity and profound knowledge, have left an indelible mark on the progress of medical sciences, pioneering insights that shaped modern medicine.
In this exhibition, six artists reinterpret the historical figures of these medical pioneers through the medium of ceramic art and works on Amalfi paper, creating an immersive and multisensory experience that intertwines history, science, and art. This journey elevates matter to an expressive tool, transforming knowledge into tangible beauty. “Il Sesto Senso” explores realms beyond the five traditional senses, delving into an invisible domain of intuition, emotion, and deep connection. It embodies the sense of art, which transcends time and space, touches the soul, and transforms contemplation into an authentic experience.
The event pays tribute to the most emblematic figures of the Mulieres Salernitanae, including Trotula de Ruggiero, Abella Salernitana, Mercuriade, Costanza Calenda, Rebecca Guarna, and Francesca Romana. These extraordinary women defied the conventions of their time and left behind groundbreaking studies and treatises that continue to inspire generations.
Enhancing this sensory experience, Danilo Bruno from The Black Monday and Giovanni Festa from Aulentissima/Bioapotheque will guide visitors through a journey of exclusive fragrances and flavors designed specifically for the exhibition. These scents and tastes, inspired by the natural remedies and medical knowledge of the Mulieres Salernitanae, will create a sensory dialogue between past and present, blending tradition and innovation.
Curated by Rita Raimondi under the artistic direction of Gianluca Iaione, Esq., and managed by Pietro Smeriglio, Esq., this event invites visitors to feel, live, and breathe history through the universal language of art. The exhibition will remain open until July 30, 2025, by appointment. For inquiries, please contact +39 392 136 2441.
