Between the Visible and the Latent: María Oriza and the Sculpture of the Void at Galería Blanca Berlin, Madrid

María Oriza’s sculptural practice begins from an idea as simple as it is radical: form does not inhabit matter — it happens in the void. In Entre lo visible y lo latente (“Between the Visible and the Latent”), running from 10 September to 17 October 2026 at Galería Blanca Berlin in Madrid, her stoneware ceramic works enter into dialogue with the space that surrounds them, turning absence into presence, surface into trace, and module into organism.

Oriza does not understand geometry as an abstract, ideal system, but rather as a structure of thought that becomes embodied in clay. To join, to fold, to curve, to cut: these are minimal gestures that build volume and awaken the void as a space of meaning. That void which many regard as mere lack becomes here a container of energy, a founding element of form itself. It is the conceptual leap that gives the exhibition its title: what is visible is inseparable from what remains latent beneath the surface, in the silence of the material and in the margin between one module and the next.

Clay introduces into her research a physical and temporal dimension that pure geometry does not know: weight, fragility, and the capacity for transformation condition every outcome, making each work the result of a dialogue — at times negotiated — between the artist’s intention and the possibilities of the medium. There is no absolute control, only attentive listening.

Central to her work is the modular principle. Repetition and variation allow the work to grow like a living being: the module is not a closed serial unit, but a flexible structure capable of generating manifold configurations. The compositional force emerges from the whole, never from the isolated element — an idea that finds its most complete synthesis in the large installation Lo que permanece (“What Remains”).

Here, suspended modules whose arrangement is given over to gravity evoke a seed container or butterfly wings: each element is born from the division of the circumference into three equal parts, from two spherical surfaces joined by a common axis. The title speaks of what is essential and inevitable — a silent, constant presence that remains while everything changes and that, precisely for this reason, goes unnoticed. The installation establishes a conversation between geometric order and natural forces, inviting the gaze towards what sustains and transforms the world without making itself known.

In Oriza’s works, the surface is not a mere finish, but the imprint left by volume and by thought. Lines, grids and reiterative structures — created with metallic oxides on the stoneware — reinforce each piece’s formal organisation and reveal its internal tensions. Alongside the aforementioned installation, the exhibition showcases Ahura (2026), Geometría del territorio (2026), Danea (2026) and Leda.

Entre lo visible y lo latente is an invitation to reconsider sculpture as a process of discovery: form is not imposed, it emerges. And it is in this emergence — between matter, space and thought — that the fascination of one of the most coherent voices in contemporary ceramics unfolds.
